Course Outline

This three-day foundational course introduces learners to ServiceNow Strategic Portfolio Management (SPM) and how organizations use SPM to align investments with strategy, prioritize work, and continuously adapt portfolios. Through hands-on labs and guided scenarios, participants learn to manage ideas, demands, projects, resources, and portfolios using Zurich release capabilities.

    Prerequisites: ServiceNow Administration Fundamentals.

    Certification & Exam Information

    Following completion of the SPM Fundamentals and SPM Implementation courses, ServiceNow recommends at least six months of hands-on ServiceNow experience before attempting the ServiceNow Certified Implementation Specialist – Strategic Portfolio Management (CIS-SPM) exam.

Learning Objectives

Module 1: Strategic Portfolio Management Introduction

  • Objectives: Review ServiceNow SPM products; explore SPM applications, architecture, and roles.
  • Labs: Lab 1.2.1 Verify the SPM Environment.

Module 2: Idea and Demand Management

  • Objectives: Create ideas and convert them to demands; submit, screen, assess, and qualify demands; explore Demand Workbench and Roadmap.
  • Labs: Lab 2.3.1 Submit an Idea; Lab 2.5.1 Complete the New Demand; Lab 2.7.1 Screen a Demand and Create a Project from a Demand.

Module 3: Project Management

  • Objectives: Differentiate waterfall, agile, and hybrid projects; initiate projects; create phases and tasks; use Project Workspace and Project Diagnostics; plan, execute, and close projects.
  • Labs: Lab 3.2.1 Create a New Project and Project Tasks; Lab 3.3.1 Additional Project Creation Options; Lab 3.4.1 Plan Tasks in Project Workspace; Lab 3.5.1 Assign Resources to the Project; Optional Lab Working with an Agile Team; Lab 3.7.1 Show Me the Money; Lab 3.8.1 Manage Project Tasks and Activities.

Module 4: Resource Management

  • Objectives: Create and manage resource assignments; understand planning attributes; use the Resource Management Workspace; review costs and timecards.
  • Labs: Lab 4.1.1 Request Resources; Lab 4.2.1 Request, Confirm, and Allocate Resources; Lab 4.3.1 Create a Timesheet and Review Actuals in RMW.

Module 5: Portfolio Planning Workspace

  • Objectives: Review the Portfolio Planning Workspace; create, update, and share portfolio plans; understand capacity planning; perform scenario planning.
  • Labs: Lab 5.2.1 Portfolio Creation and Backlog Prioritization; Lab 5.3.1 Create Your Roadmap; Lab 5.4.1 Portfolio Capacity and Financial Planning; Optional Lab Scenario Planning; Lab 5.6.1 Portfolio Tracking.

Module 6: Mature SPM

  • Objectives: Review applications that mature SPM capabilities; understand how SPM integrates with other ServiceNow applications; identify next steps.
